The SNES Classic Edition comes out in just over a month, bringing with it over 20 games and hours’ worth of 16-bit bliss, with titles including Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario World 2, Star Fox 2 (never released) and Contra III: The Alien Wars, among others.

But ask a lot of folks lately how tough it is to get their hands on a pre-order, and they’ll more than likely have a story for you. Many people have tried pre-ordering through a number of retailers, only for something to go wrong with their order, like a shipping delay or an outright cancellation by someone like WalMart.
Still, some people have gotten lucky – and are trying to take advantage of the system by selling it for top-dollar on eBay. As you can see from these auctions, pre-orders are selling on the site for over $200. That’s not a real surprise considering that the NES Classic Edition sold for a similarly high price when it released, but we’re talking about pre-orders here, and not physical units in hand.
Granted, sales of the units will likely pick up once the units begin shipping, with people trying to make hundreds of dollars on the hardware, getting them into the hands of avid fans. But these are pre-orders, and, as we’ve learned from retailers, these aren’t quite guaranteed, as they could very well be cancelled based on in-stock items.
So if you are ancey to get your hands on a system, you could take your chance on a pre-order, but we’d like to suggest maybe waiting for the systems to actually come in, so you actually get something for your money, instead of just putting all your hopes into a pre-order. We’ve done that before, and, man, have we gotten burned…
And don’t forget, retailers could open up more pre-orders for the next few weeks. We’ll keep you informed on potential ones that look to be sure bets, though they’re likely to go very quickly. Just keep an eye out and we’ll notify you of the opportunities. Good luck!
The SNES Classic Edition releases on September 29th for $79.99.
