According to a recent report from CNBC, the Science Museum of Minnesota has sold nearly $400,000 worth of Brotosaurus sweatshirts and shirts in recent days, after the design was featured on an episode of Stranger Things.
The purple shirt design, which features a Brontosaurus skeleton with the subtitle “Cool Lizard”, was worn by Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) in the season’s first episode. After the sophomore season of the hit Netflix series debuted this past month, fans began campaigning for the sweatshirt to go on sale.
The museum brought the design back, in a press release that you can read below.
“The early 80s Science Museum of Minnesota Brontosaurus hoodie that made an appearance in the first episode of season two of Netflix hit Stranger Things will be available for purchase online at smm.org/strangerthings on Tuesday, November 7 at 8 a.m. Limited quantities will also be available in the Science Museum’s Explore Store beginning at 9:30 a.m. (The Explore Store will impose a limit of two apparel items per customer; there are no limits for online orders.)
A social media follower tipped off the Science Museum to the sweatshirt’s appearance in the hugely popular TV show on Friday, October 27, the day its second season was released. Since then, the museum has been flooded with phone calls, emails, and social media posts from fans who are anxious to get their hands on the vintage sweatshirt, which was first available in the museum’s Explore Store in the early 1980s.“
The Science Museum of Minnesota debuted the new stock of sweatshirts on Tuesday morning…which quickly led their site to crash.

The museum restocked their shirts and sweatshirts later that day, and reportedly sold 10,000 items by 4pm. It’s currently unknown how many items have currently been sold.
“For us, we’re just relishing this opportunity to be connected to the popular show, especially one that has characters that are interested in science,” Kim Ramsden, the public relations director at the Science Museum of Minnesota, told CNBC. “As a non-profit, all of the proceeds will go back to our mission of science and education and inspiring other young kids like Dustin on the show and his friends to have an interest in science.”
If you’d like to own Dustin’s Brontosaurus sweatshirt for yourself, you can find out more information here. Depending on the size and style of shirt, prices range from $15 to $37.
Stranger Things 2 is now available on Netflix.
