The live-action, or CGI, versions of the characters look great, but that’s mostly because they remain so loyal to the original designs from the Black Order’s comic book debut in the Marvel Comics 2013 event Infinity.

The Black Order was primarily designed by Jerome Opena, with some assists from fellow Marvel artist Jim Cheung and Infinity writer Jonathan Hickman. In the video above, Opena explains what his goals were with the character designs.

“Jonathan [Hickman] gave me a list of the characters and a description of each one,” Opena says, “kind of like maybe the sizes and the genders and stuff like that. I just kind of went from there. I kind of take inspiration from I guess all sorts places: science fiction movies, video games, comic books even. I just try to incorporate them all and come up with something that’s cool looking or interesting looking, at least.”

You can take a look at Opena’s designs for the original Black Order – Red Dwarf, Supergiant, Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, and Ebony Maw – plus Thanos’ son Thane in the Infinity variant cover gallery below.
