Chris Pratt may be known for his work as Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the actor might have missed out on the role. In the past, the actor recently confirmed he had pursued another superhero role back in the early 2000s. Pratt appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, and the pair talked about work they did previously on the movie Strangers With Candy. It was during that conversation that Colbert nudged Pratt to talk about his failed attempt to become Superman, and Pratt confessed he’s happy he missed out on the iconic role.

During the interview, Colbert said he remembered Pratt went to California during filming and came back all excited about Superman. The host then recalled he had felt Pratt was perfectly capable for playing such an important superhero; However, Colbert was the only one who thought so at the time.

“The casting director did not agree,” Pratt joked.

“It just goes to show that it’s all divinely planned. If it’s not working out in the moment, then have faith that it might work out in the future. The no’s that you get today might mean an even more powerful yes in the future. You know what I mean?” the actor continued before joking, “I’m glad I wasn’t Superman!”

Ultimately Brandon Routh was the man asked to suit up as Superman, and Pratt may be glad he dodged Superman Returns given its initial reception. Fans and critics were quick to disregard the feature, but a loyal fanbase has come to rally behind the film in recent years. Since its debut, Routh has gone on to rejoin the DC Universe via Legends of Tomorrow. And, of course, Pratt became one of Hollywood’s most marketable leading men after he was cast as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy.
