Deadpool 2 Shuts Down Production Following Stunt Woman’s Death

Deadpool 2 is shutting down production, following the death of Joi “SJ” Harris, a professional racer who was working as a first-time stunt driver on the film.

Harris was performing a motorcycle stunt while doubling for actress Zazie Beetz as the character Domino, when her bike crashed through the glass of a ground-floor studio around Shaw Tower, in Vancouver, where Deadpool 2 is currently shooting.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by numerous Canadian law enforcement agencies, and production on the film is currently expected to resume shortly.

Statements From Deadpool 2 Cast & Crew

Following the tragic accident on set, Ryan Reynolds and others involved with Deadpool 2 have released statements about the incident. You can read those statements below:

Reynolds took a heartfelt and sensitive approach to the issue, making sure to demonstrate the utmost sensitivity to family and friends who knew the performer personally.

Deadpool 2 director David Leitch stated:

“I’m deeply saddened by the loss of one of our stunt performers today. No words can express how I and the rest of the Deadpool 2 crew feel about this tragedy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loved ones in this difficult time.” 

Statement From Fox

In addition to the statements from Ryan Reynolds and David Leitch, 20th Century Fox also issued a statement on the matter: 

“We are deeply saddened by the accident that occurred on the set of Deadpool 2 this morning. Our hearts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of our crew member during this difficult time.”

Finally, the Vancouver police are looking into the matter, and issued the following: 

“Vancouver Police can confirm that a female stunt driver has died on the set of Deadpool during a stunt on a motorcycle. VPD officers are at the scene, along with officers from WorkSafeBC. More information will be released when it is available.”

Deadpool 2 will be in theaters on June 1, 2018.
