The Phoenix will not be rising again, at least not as played by Famke Janssen. The original X-Men movie trilogy star believes that she is done playing Jean Grey for good.

Janssen reflected on her time playing the telepathic mutant and the cosmic being that came to possess her during a panel at Denver Comic Con over the weekend.

“That was so amazing. I never knew – I don’t think any of us had any understanding of how popular our first movie was going to be and that it was gonna live on for 15 plus years,” Janssen said. “And then I certainly didn’t realize โ€“ I mean I knew Jean Grey could turn into Dark Phoenix, obviously, and that Phoenix rises from the ashes, but the fact that as Jean Grey or the Phoenix they’ve killed me, I’ve come back, I’m like a cockroach. They can’t get rid of me.”

Janssen continued, expressing how grateful she was for her X-Men co-stars and confirming that she believes she won’t be returning to the franchise again.

“It’s the gift that keeps on, kept on giving,” Janssen said. “I think we’re done, but it was really great while it lasted and it lasted for a long time. It’s been nothing but a pleasure working not just as Jean Grey, which was such an honor because comics were so fantastic already, but then the entire cast who I got to play with, all my fellow actors, thespians who are so talented. It was just a wonderful experience. I’m very grateful.”

That said, she later in the panel stated that she would “do anything” to reprise the role in the future. “Jean Grey is a part of me. I would defienitely come back to play her whenever they ask me.”

Janssen played Jean Grey as a lead cast member in X-Men, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men: The Last Stand. She returned in small roles in The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Janssen’s co-stars Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart gave their definitive final performances for the X-Men franchise in Logan earlier this year. With Fox continuing the story of the young X-Men in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, none of the other original trilogy X-Men are expected to return in future films.

Sophie Turner took over the role of Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse, the third film in the X-Men franchise’s prequel series. Turner’s Jean will take center stage in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, releasing in November 2018.
