Today sees the releases of the brand new team of a Avengers in USAvengers #1 from writer Al Ewing and artist Paco Medina. The series is a follow-up to Ewing’s New Avengers series and features the most patriotic team of Marvel Comics heroes ever assembled.

Those heroes include the Red Hulk or a Red Hulk at least. It turns out the Red Hulk who is helping to lead and organize the USAvengers isn’t Thunderbolt Ross.

USAvengers #1 Spoilers Follow.

The new Red Hulk is Gen. Robert L. Maverick. Fans who kept up with New Avengers will remember Maverick as the man in charge of Project Troubleshooter.

Maverick isn’t another gamma-irradiated, anger issues type of Hulk. Maverick’s Red Hulk transformations are both controlled and short-lived.

It turns out that SHIELD was working on a biological plugin that would allow someone to have their body enhanced to half-Hulk levels. Now that AIM has gone legit, SHIELD handed the plugin over to AIM. AIM was able to improve on the idea and allow someone who had the right genetic makeup to go full-Hulk for one hour every day and a half.

It turns out General Maverick was just such a genetic match, and he couldn’t be happier about it. He relishes in being the Hulk and uses his ability to crush a helicarrier with a volcano on top (you read that right) heading for the United States’ west coast without breaking a sweat.

Maverick may be enjoying being the Red Hulk now, but the moral of every story involving the Hulk tends to be that he can’t be controlled. We’ll see if things go haywire for Maverick’s Red Hulk as USAvengers continues.

USAvengers #1 is on sale now.
