The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is always in flux, but its next phase does have some tentpoles in place. Avengers 4 will lead into Marvel’s fourth phase, leaving the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming to kick off the new arc in earnest. And, now, one Marvel Studios exec is hinting at how Avengers 4 will set up the web-swinging sequel.

Last night, Spider-Man: Homecoming enjoyed its red carpet premiere in New York, and Jon Watts showed out in force. The director stopped by Heat Vision to discuss the future of the MCU, and Watts said Avengers 4 will have a great amount of influence on the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

“I think that would be a lot of fun. There’s still a lot of unexplored territory [sic],” Watts said, nodding to the franchise’s high school narrative. “To deal with the fallout of Infinity War and be a junior in high school, I think sounds like a pretty good movie to me.”

So far, Marvel and Sony have both been tight-lipped about the second Spider-Man film. The studios are no doubt waiting to see what fan reaction is like to their first film, but current press reviews have nothing but praise for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Aside from Watts’ comments, fans only know the sequel will come after Avengers 4 and take place just minutes after that film ends.

During a chat with Fandom, Sony Pictures producer Amy Pascal admitted Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 will be very closely tied to the fourth Avengers’ ending. “We are starting now the next one which will start a few minutes after Avengers 4 wraps as a story,” she said, nodding to the sequel.

Right now, Marvel Studios is keeping its main focus on the film that will proceed Avengers 4. Production has already started on Avengers: Infinity War, and Tom Holland spoke with Heat Vision briefly about filming.

“There’s a lot of laughing, there’s a lot of joking, it’s a lot of action,” Holland said about the Avengers: Infinity War set. “But it’s really fun.”
