Spider-Man: Homecoming is now in theaters, bringing the first Spider-Man adventure that takes place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The major story arc of Homecoming has to do with Peter Parker angst and desire to graduate from street-level crimefighter to full-on Avenger – a chance he finally gets at the end of the film, after defeating Adrian Toomes/The Vulture (Michael Keaton) and bringing him to justice.
In one of the final scenes of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) bring Peter to Avengers facility upstate, to announce Spider-Man’s inclusion to The Avengers to the world – and as a “signing bonus,” Tony rewards Peter with a brand new Spider-Man costume!
That Spider-Man 2.0 costume is much a different design than what fans have seen in any of the live-action Spider-Man movies – or even in the comic books. However, even though the aesthetic may be different, there’s still a possibility that Spidey’s 2.0 Stark costume has ties to some famous suits from Marvel comic books.
So What Is Spider-Man’s New Costume at the End of Homecoming? We have some theories to share!
Iron Spider
The first and most obvious guess is that the new Spider-Man costume that Tony designs for Peter is none other than the infamous “Iron Spider” suit.ย
During the comic book version of Marvel’sย “Civil War” event, Tony Stark recruited Spider-Man to his side of “The Initiative,” complete with revealing Peter’s secret identity to the world, and giving him a new suit, based heavily on Iron Man armor tech.ย
Some of the distinguishing features of the Iron Spider suit are it’s mechanical spider legs (Waldoes), and its multiple configurations and layers. Clearly, the crimson and gold design aesthetic from the comics is different than the suit we saw at the end ofย Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the technological aspects of the Iron Spider costume could easily be the same.ย
Stealth Costume
The stealth costume (or “Big Time Costume”) came out of the “Big Time” storyline, and comes in several iterations – any one of which could be the inspiration for the suit we saw at the end ofย Homecoming.ย
In the comics, the suit was designed by Peter Parker, based on the work of Hank Pym and techniques that Peter learned while working for Tony Stark. The suit’s main feature is its “camo mode,” which allows Peter to be invisible from both audio and visual detection. It also has other features specific to defeating certain enemies (Hobgoblin), such as sonic attack defenses and metal-dissolving tracers.
This would be a more obscure pick than the Iron Spider design, but could definitely be reference point for Peter’s new Avengers costume.ย
Spider-Armor
There have been several versions of the Spider-Armor costume, which Peter hasย designed at various points when he needed an upgrade to help take down foes.
Of all the versions of the armor, the MK III would be the most likely version to correlate with the costume Tony offers Peter at the end ofย Homecoming; the MK III is also known as “Anti-Sinister Six Armor,” with features meant to counteract the various members ofย the Sinister Six villain team.ย
Theย Spider-Man: Homecomingย mid-credits scene was an early tease of what could soon be a live-action version of The Sinister Six, so the Spider-Armor may soon come in handy, whether it’s in theย Avengers: Infinity War, or whenย Spider-Man: Homecoming 2ย begins directly afterward.ย
