While 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse took the first place crown last weekend, it was still a pretty dismal box office weekend overall, and included the hugely disappointing return from Disney’s Alice Through The Looking Glass.
With the competition not being at an all time high, expect Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows to run roughshod over X-Men: Apocalypse to become the new number one film in America (according to Deadline).

While many predict it will sail to number 1 quite easily, most don’t see it besting the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles $65.6 million opening. Current predictions are in the $30 million to $35 million range, which seems a bit reserve, but so far this year’s sequels are at a -19% compared to the previous installment.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows reunites the turtles with Megan Fox (April) and Will Arnett (Vernon), and brings in new players like Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams), Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly), Krang (Brad Garrett) and Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry).
The film cost $135 million to make in addition to advertising, slightly higher than the original film. The original Turtles ended its run with $191.2 million domestically and $302.1 million internationally for a total of $493.3 million.
While scoring a number one hit is never a bad thing, Fox has to be disappointed that X-Men: Apocalypse didn’t score better with critics and general audiences, especially coming off of the previous film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. Days is regarded by many as one of the best in the series, and so far Apocalypse seems to be closer to X-Men: The Last Stand, which is not a great place to be.
