The Spider-Man movie franchise is about to open up in a big way – thanks to the release of Marvel’s version of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming this summer. While we wait on the latest Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer to debut (check back tomorrow!), there’s been a lot of rapid development on the front of the long-awaited Venom movie.

A release date for the movie has been set for fall 2018, with production slated to start this fall. In addition to the behind-the-scenes info, we’ve learned some surprising facts about Venom‘s creative direction, as well. The spinoff is being developed as an R-rated film which will take place in the same sandbox as the upcoming Black Cat & Silver Sable movie – but it won’t be directly connected to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is.

Every since fans have learned that Venom may be doing its own thing, without a big presence from Spider-Man, there’s been rounds of debate about whether that approach is truly viable – or simply the next film in the Spider-Man franchise to miss the mark. Well it seems that debate isn’t just being held in the realm of fandom; some Marvel Comics creative icons are also having a hard time agreeing on whether or not Venom can carry a film without his web-slinging nemesis

Spider-Man vs Venom Movie

That was Twitter exchange between Deadpool co-creators Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza. Liefeld is known for being very outspoken with his opinions regarding superhero movies – and it’s funny to see Nicieza challenge him like this. The two pretty much embody the two sides fo the argument currently being held in the fanspace: is Venom and interesting enough character to carry a film by himself.

While Venom is definitely an interesting character, it should be remembered that not too long ago, Sony was betting on Spider-Man himself being ale to carry an entire cinematic franchise universe – and we all saw how that ended up. That’s all to say: these plans for spinoffs that are not connected to Spidey or the Marvel Cinematic Universe kind of feel like they’re facing the same potential hurdles as the era of Spider-Man films that preceded them.
