2 Years Later, A Newly Added Netflix Horror is Officially A Hit (& The Twist Ending is Wild)

It looks like Netflix has added a new horror movie that deserved way more hype when it initially dropped back in 2023โ€”as evidenced by the fact that itโ€™s nabbed a spot in the Top Ten in the two days itโ€™s been on the streamer. Easiest to describe as weirdly similar to the Simpsons โ€œTreehouse of Horrorโ€ episode where Bart has a mutant twin locked in the attic, or as the freaky older sibling to Coraline, we are definitely enjoying this dark and totally overlooked horror film.

In hindsight, it isnโ€™t all that shocking that so few had seen the film when it only managed to bring in $10M worldwide back when it premiered, overshadowed by flashier titles like Five Nights At Freddyโ€™s and Insidious. But Cobweb has a killer cast featuring Lizzy Caplan, Cleopatra Coleman, and Antony Starr. The movie draws us into a story thatโ€™s perfect for the ramp up to Halloweenโ€”because itโ€™s never too early to get excited for Halloween.

Cobweb Is A Story About A Childโ€™s Wild Imaginationโ€”Or Is It?

Peter, an 8-year-old boy, played by Woody Norman, has started to hear knocks and voices coming from inside the walls of his bedroom. His parents, both overprotective and odd in their own respective ways, initially wave away his concerns, telling him that it must be his imagination and that it is all in his head. As the dismissal of his fearsโ€”and the strange noisesโ€”continue, Peter begins to believe his parents (Lizzy Caplan and Anthony Starr) might just be behind whatever is making the sounds in the walls, leading him to question everything they tell him.

Sitting at a 71% on the Popcornmeter, reviews are generally positive, with the biggest critiques centering around the last 20 minutes of the film (and the bad lighting). Alex B. on Rotten Tomatoes says that the mood of the movie is โ€œNeil Gaiman meets Tim Burton with a lightning bolt of Kevin Williamson. This is an absolutely elegant & classic horror encompassing all the elements of the perfect formula – fabulous set-designs, choreography, and character development. Add this to your list of classics!โ€

Cobweb definitely has the potential to become a cult classic now that Netflix is allowing it to get the views and love that it deserves.
