James Gunn’s Batman Update Casts Doubt On Everything We Thought We Knew About The DCU’s Reboot

It looks like once again, James Gunn is gleefully keeping us all on our toes, this time with some more news about Batman: The Brave and The Bold that none of us were expecting.ย

Sitting down for an interview with IGNโ€™s Jim Vejvoda, Gunn really wasnโ€™t shy with what he wanted us to know about the DCU reboot (even if weโ€™re still reeling from that โ€œNopeโ€ in response to whether or not theyโ€™d eyed anyone for Batman yet). Following up on the “nope” heard round the world, he said, โ€œListen, first of all, I can’t tell you the amount of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman. I think you’d have a harder time finding actors who don’t want to be Batman. He’s the one character everyone wants to play. That’s the truth.โ€

Batman Changes Would Fit With What James Gunn Has Already Said About The Dark Knight

Vejvoda was quick to ask about Damian Wayne and whether or not we might be able to expect a Bruce Wayne in his 30s. โ€œNo, I think you have to wait to see the movie. Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux on what his situation is with his parentage and all that stuff, so I wouldn’t take any of it,โ€ Gunn said, before cryptically adding, โ€œI think you have to wait to see exactly what’s happening.โ€

With everything weโ€™ve heard so far, it sounds an awful lot like the original choice of doing the Damian Wayne story might not even be happening. Which, oddly enough, might just match what weโ€™ve heard from Gunn before, when he said he considered Batman a “f*cking maniac”โ€”which doesn’t exactly fit with what we might imagine as a doting father-to-be. Though weโ€™ve had interesting stories centering around particularly violent father figures (Frank Castle, Hawkeye, and Sarutobi Asuma from Naruto, to name a few), so this wouldnโ€™t be an altogether bad direction to go in. Frankly, it would be better to see the maniac than a Three Men & A Baby-style fish out of water situation where Bruce and Damian are involved. And it looks like Gunn agrees with us, saying, โ€œBut yet heโ€™s not a campy Batman. Iโ€™m not interested in that. Iโ€™m not interested in a funny, campy Batman, really. So weโ€™re dealing with that. I think I have a way in, by the way. I think I really know what itโ€™sโ€”I just am dealing with the writer to make sure that we can make it a reality.โ€
