For the better part of nearly two decades fans of Kevin Smith‘s View Askewniverse have been asking the writer-director-actor when there would be a sequel to the 1999 cult favorite, Dogma.

During a question-and-answer session inside the Hammerstein Ballroom at NYCC2017, the subject was brought up again. And Smith was quick to distance himself from any foreseeable future.

“F^ck no, I don’t think we need a ‘Dogma 2’ and I am sure as sh!t not going near any religious movies at this point,” he said.

The introduction to the outburst was based on an audience question regarding the price of the original being too high on the internet. Smith explained that the rights to the film belong solely to the Weinstein Company and that recently he and one brother, Harvey Weinstein, had began discussions about the contract situation and re-release prospects of the original film when Weinstein joked that they should discuss a second movie.

Talk of a sequel began back in 2005 when fans got Smith to expound upon making another movie. At that time he teased that it could happen.

“So weird you should ask this, because ever since 9/11, I have been thinking about a sequel of sorts. I mean, the worst terrorist attack on American soil was religiously bent. In the wake of said attack, the leader of the “Free World” outed himself as pretty damned Christian,” he said at the time. “In the last election, rather than a quagmire war abroad, the big issue was whether or not gay marriage was moral. Back when I made Dogma, I always maintained that another movie about religion wouldn’t be forthcoming, as Dogma was the product of 28 years of religious and spiritual meditation, and I’d kinda shot my wad on the subject. Now? I think I might have more to say. And, yes, the Last Scion would be at the epicenter of it. And she’d have to be played by Alanis. And we’d need a bigger budget, because the entire third act would be the Apocalypse. Scary thing is this: the film would have to touch on Islam. And unlike the Catholic League, when those cats don’t like what you do, they issue a death warrant on your ass. And now that I’ve got a family, I’m not as free to stir the shit-pot as I was when I was single, back when I made Dogma. I mean, now I’ve gotta think about more than my own safety and well-being. But regardless โ€“ yeah, a Dogma followup’s been swimming around in my head for some time now.”

As recently as Awesome Con 2016, Smith had led fans to believe that there was a chance it could come to pass.

“Bethany’s (Linda Fiorintino) child would look like Alanis Morisette since she played God and gave her the child in the first film,” a FilmFad.com recap read. “He would also find a way to introduce the religion of Islam into the sequel since there is a lot of media surrounding the topic. Finally, the most hilarious part of the film would be a feud between Jay and Silent Bob because Silent Bob has become a Baptist priest.”

With the turmoil happening in the United States with politics and religion, it appears that Smith has moved in another direction.

His next project is another sequel however, Smith and his team are starting production in January for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
