Science fiction fans have much to look forward to in October 2025, in terms of both film and television releases. The month’s offerings span three of the year’s most highly anticipated movies, in addition to a pair of animated television shows with big hype behind them. As if the amount of sci-fi media being released wasn’t already exciting enough, all the movies and TV shows hitting our screens this month are coming from different corners of the genre, promising variety as well.

And while the usual suspects in the genre like Disney and Star Wars are all releasing content this month, we’re particularly excited for the works made by some of the industry’s most acclaimed filmmakers, like visionaries Yorgos Lanthimos and Guillermo del Toro.
October 2025 Sci-Fi Movies Will Be a Feast for the Eyes

October 2025 will see the release of three sci-fi films that all have the potential to be awards darlings, as well: Disney’s TRON: Ares, Netflix’s Frankenstein, and Focus Features’ Bugonia.
TRON: Ares resurrects the iconic digital world from the 1982 and 2010 films on October 10th. Jared Leto plays Ares, a highly sophisticated Program sent into the “real world” on a dangerous mission. Leto’s become a controversial figure as of late, but we’re cautiously optimistic about the viability of the film, given its stacked supporting cast. Jeff Bridges is returning as Kevin Flynn, and he’ll be joined by Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Jodie Turner-Smith. With that cast and Nine Inch Nails providing the score, we’re hopeful that TRON: Ares will elevate itself above a run-of-the-mill studio tentpole that could perhaps attract some awards attention for its technical achievements, and maybe its music.
Guillermo del Toro’s passion project, Frankenstein, begins a limited theatrical engagement on October 17th before hitting Netflix on November 7th. The film looks to be a return to form for the visionary filmmakers, and the movie has been garnering praise both for its spectacular visuals and nuanced performances on the festival circuit. Critics have been saying that del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s monster masterpiece is one of the most faithful to date, and we’re excited at the prospect of having a modern classic on our hands. Frankenstein demands to be seen in theaters before its Netflix release, to get the full scope of del Toro’s spectacular visuals.
There’s also Bugonia to look forward to on October 31st. The dark sci-fi comedy is perhaps the most grounded of the trio of films releasing this month, and it re-teams filmmakers Yorgos Lanthimos with muse Emma Stone in an unnerving, gripping tale about a high-powered CEO (Stone) who is kidnapped by two male conspiracy theorists (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis), who are convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying the world. We expect Lanthimos to leverage the sci-fi genre to craft a biting, lingering societal satire in Bugonia, making it a perfect Halloween watch.
Animated Sci-Fi Will Dominate TV

On the small screen, October starts strong with the premiere of the sixth and final season of Solar Opposites. The entire season drops on Hulu on October 13th, and we’ll certainly be binging it to see how the saga of our favorite animated extraterrestrial family in middle America concludes (as well as the saga of the miniaturized society they own). Solar Opposites provides some much-needed lighter fare in the genre, as all three of the sci-fi film releases skew toward more dramatic and serious projects. We’re looking forward to a healthy dose of humor and heart to go along with our wacky alien caper.
October also sees the return of one of the most unique and interesting shows in the Star Wars franchise: Star Wars: Visions. It’s an animated anthology of shorts that each showcase the complex world and mythology of Star Wars from specific cultural lenses (like anime). Season 3 debuts on October 29th, and the nine shorts making up the show’s latest installment will spotlight nine different Japanese animation studios. The English cast is also formidable, and will include Anna Sawai, Freddie Highmore, George Takei, Harvey Guillén, Jodie Turner-Smith, Judith Light, Simu Liu, Stephanie Hsu, and Steve Buscemi. Star Wars: Visions provides a perfect bite-sized yet incredibly thought-provoking viewing experience, not to mention the anime style adds more gorgeous texture to the greater Star Wars universe.
