The Brave and the Bold: DC's James Gunn Gives Surprising Update on Batman Reboot

Gunn confirms John Logan is not writing the DCU's Batman movie.

James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe is gaining momentum, bringing a number of movies and Max-exclusive television shows to life in the coming years. Among these is The Brave and the Bold, a new Batman movie that will be set within their main continuity. The Flash director Andy Muschietti is currently attached to the film, but updates have been relatively slim after the months of work stoppage due to last year's Hollywood strikes. As new comments from Gunn show, work on the film isn't going exactly how fans think.

Gunn recently took to Threads to reveal that, despite reports and rumors suggesting as much, The Aviator and Skyfall alum John Logan was not attached to or in talks to write The Brave and the Bold.

What Is The Brave and the Bold About?

The Brave and the Bold is confirmed to star Bruce Wayne / Batman and Damian Wayne / Robin, with Gunn and Safran teasing that the film might feature other characters from the larger "Bat-family."

"This is the introduction of the DCU's Batman..." Gunn explained to reporters in January of this year. "This is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman's actual son who we didn't know existed for the first eight to 10 years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He's a little son of a bitch. He's my favorite Robin. It's based on the Grant Morrison comic book's run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs, and we are putting that all together right now."

"And this is obviously a feature film, and it's going to feature other members of the extended 'Bat-family', just because we feel like they've been left out of the Batman stories in the theater for far too long," Safran added.

What Is On the DC Universe Slate?

As Gunn and Safran revealed last year, the initial DC Studios slate for "Gods and Monsters" will include movies for Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority. It will include the HBO Max television shows Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series.

"If you look at the MCU, there are very few traditional superheroes," Gunn previously said of the DCU's approach. "There was never a guy with a secret identity until Spider-Man in the MCU. Their Cap was turned into a soldier even though he wears a mask. Iron Man outed himself at the end of the first Iron Man because they don't want to deal with the whole secret identity stuff. But there is a bit more of a fantasy element to DCU, because there are these larger-than-life superheroes and for me, there's Superman and Clark Kent. They're two different characters, and you have to find a way to deal with them that's as grounded as possible within this world of DC. One of the things that I love about DC, that excites me about DC, is that in a way it's another alternate history. It is Gotham City and Metropolis and Star City and Bludhaven, and all these different places in this other reality, and it makes it a little bit like Westeros in some ways. I love it in that way. I love that we get to create true worldbuilding in DC, it isn't just 'we're throwing some superheroes on Earth.' I think right now, that's one of the key differences."
