Transformers: The Last Knight is bringing the latest installment of Michael Bay’s adaptation of the popular ’80s cartoon and toy line – which happens to be one of the biggest blockbuster movie franchises that people love to hate.

The previous installment, Transformers: Age of Extinction, was particularly hated on – even by longtime fans of the franchise. One area of Transformers 4 that got universal criticism was the runtime: Age of Extinction ran for 2 hours and 45 minutes – way longer than anyone needed it to be. Recently, there was word circulating that Transformers 5 was over 3 hours long, based on a Google search that turned up that runtime as a search result on the film.

So is Transformers: The Last Knight’s runtime really as long as The Godfather’s? According to Michael Bay himself: no, no it is not.

For a frame of reference, here is how long all of Transformers movies have run (starting with the most recent). HINT: They’ve only gotten longer as the series has gone on:

  • Transformers: Age of Extinction – 2h 45min
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon – 2h 34min
  • Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – 2h 30min
  • Transformers – 2h 24min

The info above drapes Bay’s comment in a slight veil of confusion. Transformers: The Last Knight is shorter than “the last 3 movies by a lot,” which would set it under the 150-minute mark – but the original film was just six minutes shorter, at 144 minutes. So is Transformers 5 also shorter than Transformers 1? Alas, a tweet can only reveal so much.

At this point, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that most viewers would be content with a Transformers action/adventure that wrapped up in a clean two-hour stretch. There is enough “fluff” to these films (like those quasi-offensive “ethnic comedy” scenes), that keeping things leaner, meaner, and focused on the robot action would only help things.

Transformers: The Last Knight will be in theaters on June 21st. We’ll keep you updated about its official runtime.

Transformers: The Last Knight is directed by Michael Bay, who has directed all five films in the series so far. Bay has stated that this will be his final film for the franchise.

Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci will reprise their roles from Transformers: Age of Extinction. Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, and John Turturro reprise their roles for the first three Transformers movies. The film also stars Isabela Moner, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Santiago Cabrera, Liam Garrigan, Jerrod Carmichael, and Mitch Pileggi.

Transformers: The Last Knight’s voice cast includes Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, John Goodman as Hound, and John DiMaggio as Crosshairs. Other transformers appearing the film include Bumblebee, Drift, Hot Rod, Cogman, Canopy, Sqweeks, Grimlock, Megatron, Barricade, Onslaught, Hooligan, and Mohawk.
