After Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters later this summer, Michael Bay and his squad of screenwriters will turn their attention toward building a shared universe based on Hasbro’s long-running toy line of Robots In Disguise.
The first spinoff film in the universe is steadily gaining steam as the Bumblebee solo movie is set to begin production this year.

Bumblebee’s script by Christina Hodson is set to be adapted by Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight, and Bay recently revealed the story to be a prequel during a conversation with MTV at CinemaCon. Maybe we’ll learn how the Transformer found his way in that dealership where he was found by Shia LaBeouf’s character in the first film.
Production for Bumblebee is set to begin in earnest in July, according to MyEntertainmentWorld.
Although Bay has shared his intention to step away from the franchise after the release of The Last Knight, the production process for this latest Transformers film included gathering together a writers room so that they could build a mythology and create a broader universe for the franchise, one that would allow spinoffs between the main entry films.

And now that they have 14 different stories developed, Bay has gone on to say that he might not be done with the seriesโin fact, he wants to direct one of the spinoff movies.
Bumblebee’s development was conducted in conjunction with The Last Knight, so expect the fifth installment in the Transformers franchise to set up the prequel and other possible spinoffs as well.
