Why The Mandalorian & Grogu Brings Back the Razor Crest (What Happened To the N-1 Starfighter?)

Five years after being destroyed, the Razor Crest is back in The Mandalorian and Grogu. The ship quickly became a Star Wars fan-favorite after its debut in Season 1 of the Disney+ hit, but the show then delivered a twist in its second year. In The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 6, “Chapter 14: The Tragedy,” the Razor Crest was blown up by the Empire. Eventually, Din Djarin got himself another iconic ship, the Naboo (or N-1) Starfighter, as previously seen in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

Sleeker and much faster than the bulkier Razor Crest, the N-1 Starfighter was a change of pace in more ways than one for Mando and Grogu, and it seems like one he wasn’t too keen on staying with. As The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer reveals, Din is back in the Razor Crest. This is, to be clear, a new version of the ship, rather than a sudden retcon or some absurd reveal that it actually survived its destruction, but it nonetheless begs the question of why he’s gone back to it and left the Starfighter behind.

The Razor Crest’s Return In The Mandalorian & Grogu Makes Sense

The Razor Crest in The Mandalorian and Grogu

The N-1 Starfighter is a fantastic ship, and one of the best designs from the Star Wars prequels. However, it may not be the most practical for someone like Din Djarin. While he’s now working for the New Republic, he is still very much a bounty hunter at heart, and appears to be carrying out missions not too dissimilar to those we’ve seen in the TV show (in fact, based on the trailer, this really does look like it’ll just be an expanded episode, and that’s not bad thing). The Crest has a lot more storage room, which makes it far more suited to jobs where Din is bringing people in and carrying cargo, as well as simply spending more time in the ship.

There’s also a sense that he truly loved the Razor Crest. He reluctantly agreed to take the Naboo Starfighter in The Book of Boba Fett Episode 5, “The Mandalorian,” and mentioned multiple times in that installment how he was hoping for a direct replacement for his ship, not something different. That ship was the closest thing he had to a home for himself and Grogu, and it seems likely that will continue in the movie, so it’s understandable why he’d have jumped at the chance to get a new one.

Of course, there’s also another side to this that cannot be explained in-universe: merchandise. A new Star Wars movie means the chance to sell new Star Wars toys and figures. A brand-new take on the Razor Crest fits perfectly with that, and should be a major part of the merchandising line for the film when it releases. It’s also worth noting that the new version does feature some yellow panels that are reminiscent of the N-1, suggesting he might even have taken parts from it to help build this new ship.

Star Wars Keeps Walking Back The Mandalorian Season 2

The Razor Crest return is also notable for how it fits into a broader picture with Star Wars’ movies and TV shows. And that is: undoing much of what happened in The Mandalorian Season 2. This was a game-changing season for the franchise, and had multiple storylines and plot points that should’ve had a long-lasting impact. These include the ship being destroyed, a growing sense of Din Djarin questioning the Way, and Grogu going off with Luke Skywalker.

All of those have now been undone. The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian Season 3 not only had Mando reunite with Grogu, but also doubled down on his commitment to the more rigid rules of the Mandalorians, as followed by the likes of the Armorer, with him seeking redemption for removing his helmet. Now it’s gone back on the Razor Crest too, albeit in a different way, as it’s a new version. This one isn’t as problematic, of course, as it doesn’t fundamentally change the storytelling or character work, but it does fit a wider pattern.

The N-1 Starfighter Could Still Return In A Star Wars Movie

Unless we see a scene with it early on (which isn’t implausible), the Naboo Starfighter won’t be appearing in The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t make a big screen return, and it could further explain its absence in this movie. The next Star Wars film after Din Djarin’s movie debut will be Star Wars: Starfighter. Given the title alone, and a plot that focuses on Ryan Gosling’s character being chased across the galaxy, it’s possible we could see an N-1 featured there instead. That would allow Star Wars to keep using the iconic ship, while not having it be part of The Mandalorian and Grogu.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released on May 22nd, 2026. Star Wars: Starfighter will land on May 28th, 2027.
