While female members of the Lane family are normally romantic interests for Kryptonian super beings, they'll take a slightly different track for CBS' Supergirl.

As revealed in a first look at the character, Supergirl's Lucy Lane will take the role of Kara Zor-El's romantic foil. Lucy, the younger sister of the famed Lois Lane, will play a regular recurring role on Supergirl. Played by Jenna Dewan-Tatum (American Horror Story), the character will enter Supergirl several episodes into the premiere season. Described as " "strong, smart and successful in her own right", according to Entertainment Weekly, Lane could befuddle the brewing romance between Supergirl and Jimmy Olson.

"We hope to explore the history that Lucy has with James Olsen—or, as Lucy knows him, Jimmy Olsen," Supergirl Executive Producer Ali Adler explained to EW. says. "I think we're going to bring in her father. She not [only] plays a romantic foil with whatever Kara and James are brewing, but people will also be surprised that she's really a woman's woman. She and Kara develop their own friendship, too. We're not just bringing her in to purposefully create tension. She serves a larger story drive."

Supergirl will find Kara Zor-El accepting her destiny as Earth's protector in the modern age, protecting her adopted home of National City from Phantom Zone fugitives.
