Two weeks ago on a Tuesday night, at around 9 p.m, 18-year-old Lane Smith was at a Flower Mound park with his friends, searching for a PokéStop—a place to stock up on Poké Balls and helpful items. While distracted by the game, with his eyes glued to the screen of his cell phone, a small brown snake — believed to be a copperhead — wrapped itself around Smith’s foot and sunk its venomous fangs into his toe.

In a matter of minutes, Smith’s foot began to swell and a sharp pain shot up his thigh. He was rushed off to Flower Mound Emergency Center.

Luckily, Smith didn’t require any anti-venom treatment as only one of the snake’s fangs broke the skin. In less than 24 hours, Smith was released.

“He wants people to know to be aware of their surroundings, to always have a buddy with them,” said hospital spokeswoman CeCe Clemens (via CBS). “He was glad that he had a friend there that was able to get him help.”
