While the fan response to Sin City newcomer Dennis Haysbert has been largely positive, the loss of Michael Clarke Duncan was a profound one. The actor, who died in September, left behind some massive shoes to fill in Hollywood in general, but even more specifically in Sin City, where the long-in-development sequel was finally starting to really get moving just before its Manute passed away. Haysbert, the likable car insurance guy who had been the President of the United States on 24, was tapped almost immediately to take up the role, with no other real actors seemingly considered before the announcement was made. Now one of the film's directors is saying that they're tailoring the part a bit to play to his strengths. "Dennis is going to bring his own thing to it but it's very much pays tribute to what Michael did and is very much in line with the role," filmmaker Robert Rodriguez told MTV News. "He's such a fantastic actor and an amazing presence. He's really exciting to work with. I've been adding dialogue for him. It's so fun." He added that while Haysbert isn't the type to play a lumbering, physical type, it's stepping outside of an actor's comfort zone that makes Sin City: A Dame to Kill For so appealing. "People get to do things they don't normally get to do in the movies in Frank Miller's Sin City world," Rodriguez said. "We have a lot of license to disguise yourself and really be someone else, do something totally outside your normal career. I think that's why actors tend to gravitate toward these movies. It's a real license to have a lot of fun and do something different, to take a vacation from the work they normally do, to go out on a limb — and it's welcomed." Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is filming now; the movie is due in theaters in October.
