Sony has just moved their Jon Watts Spider-Man reboot to July 7th, 2017.

The move comes in conjunction with Disney, their producing partner on the film through Marvel Studios. It's part of a sports-like four-movie release date trade, Star Wars: Episode VIII was moved from May 26, 2017 to December 15, 2017. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales then moved from July 7, 2017 to that May 26 slot.

That left that prime "Fourth of July weekend" spot open for Sony and Marvel's joint production on Spider-Man, bumping it up from the July 28, 2017 date it originally held (and that date was originally held by Marvel for Thor: Ragnarok, since moved to November of that year - clear?). That date is now reserved for Sony's Jumanji reboot.

The Amazing Spider-Man, Sony's second take on the character (this one will be its third), was also released Fourth of July weekend, but failed to capture the box office results of the original franchise. The new film will take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the possibility of characters going between franchises/studios now open - and starting with the new Spidey's first appearance, in Captain America: Civil War, played by Tom Holland.

The new Spider-Man movie will star Holland as a high school aged Spidey who's been doing the gig for awhile - which means no rehashed origin story. Jon Watts directs.
