The Nun, a spinoff of last week's hit movie The Conjuring 2 from Aquaman director James Wan, is currently in development at Warner Bros.

Wan and Peter Safran are reuniting to produce the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

They also note that the demon nun character around whom the film is centered "didn't exist until about three months before Conjuring 2 opened, as she was only added during last-minute reshoots."

They say the film originally saw Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's charcters squaring off against a horned, demonic antagonist. The reshoots took place in March, with New Line supporting the change.

The Nun will be the second spinoff from the Conjuring series, following 2014's Annabelle. That movie grossed more than $250 million worldwide, and New Line has a sequel slated for 2017.

This past weekend, The Conjuring 2 beat out Warcraft to take the top spot at the North American box office.

The Conjuring 2, for its part, cost about a quarter of what Warcraft did to make ($40 million versus $150 million reported budgets), setting it up to be a big success for Warner Bros.

Warcraft, which earned a huge opening weekend in China, couldn't come close to matching those numbers in the U.S. as it earned just over $24 million for the weekend, down fromearlier projections of $25-30 million.

In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren come out of a self-imposed sabbatical to travel to Enfield, a borough in north London. There, they meet Peggy Hodgson, an overwhelmed single mother of four who tells the couple that something evil is in her home. Ed and Lorraine believe her story when the youngest daughter starts to show signs of demonic possession. As the Warrens try to help the besieged girl, they become the next target of the malicious spirits.
