While HBO lays the foundation for Game of Thrones upcoming series conclusion, there is still work going on behind the scenes to bring back another fan favorite series, that being True Detective.

True Detective was critically acclaimed by fans and critics alike after its first season, but season two seemed to underwhelm both communities. Season two featured an all-new cast, including Colin Farrell, Rachael McAdams, and Vince Vaughn. Even with some top tier talent, many cited issues with the season's plot, and fans just didn't get attached to their characters like they did to Matthew McConaughey's Rust Cohle and Woody Harrelson's Marty Hart.

Even with the lukewarm reception of season two, HBO Head of Programming Casey Bloys recently confirmed that a third season is indeed still being talked about (via Deadline).

"It's not dead. We are hoping for a third season. It's a very valuable franchise for us."

If it did happen, series creator Nic Pizzolatto would most likely not be writing the show, but would be involved in a supervisory capacity. While Bloy's is hopeful for a third season, it might still be a ways off, as he also stated: "I'm not sure we have the right take for a third season yet."

Bloys isn't the only one who would like for a third season to happen it turns out, as McConaughey recently expressed a want to return to the character on the Rich Eisen Show.

"I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights. I miss watching 'True Detective' on Sunday nights. I was happy when we made that for six months, because I was on my own island. It would have to be the right context, the right way." He continued, "That thing - when I read [the original script] I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rust Cohle, I'm in."

If a third season does happen, it would be in HBO's best interest to return to the formula that worked in the original season, and that starts with McConaughey and Harrelson.
