USA Network has renewed Mr. Robot for a third season.
Created by Sam Esmail and Universal Cable Productions, Mr. Robot is currently in the midst of its second season. The show has been nominated for six Emmy Awards and has quickly become USA’s most talked about original show currently airing and, arguably, of all time.
Despite critical acclaim, Mr. Robot’s renewal was not a guarantee. While the first season was a breakout for USA, the second season has seen steady declines in viewership, though delayed viewings and streaming numbers have remained solid.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Mr. Robot, a series that has pushed boundaries, captured the cultural zeitgeist, and been honored as one of the best dramas on television,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “Midway through its second season, Mr. Robot continues to break new ground and open up new opportunities for the network.”
In Mr. Robot, Emmy-nominated Rami Malek plays Elliot Alderson, a brilliant programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer. Elliott is drafted into an underground society of hackers by the group’s mysterious leader, played by Christian Slater. The show’s first season saw the hacker group go to war with a massive conglomerate referred to Evil Corp. Season two deals with the consequences of that attack.
Mr. Robot’s cast also includes Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Martin Wallström, Grace Gummer, Michael Cristofer and Stephanie Corneliussen.
“Being the home studio for this wonderful, completely original show is an exhilarating experience. Sam and company just keep taking it to another level,” said Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and UCP President.
Mr. Robot airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on USA Network.
