Internet Reacts to Amy Schumer’s Barbie Casting

In 2007, 2008, stand-up comedienne, writer, actress, and producer Amy Schumer first appeared on reality-television series Last Comic Standing and Reality Bites Back; however, she didn’t begin her rise to fame until several years later when she delivered hilarious and memorable perfomances during Comedy Central’s roasts of Charlie Sheen and Roseanne Barr. Since then, she’s parlayed that success into a television career — starring in her own sketch comedy series, Inside Amy Schumer (2013-present), and host the 2015 MTV Movie Awards — and a film career, starring in 2015’s Trainwreck (she also wrote).

Today, it was reported Schumer’s next big project will be starring as Barbie in Sony Picture’s live-action take on Mattel’s top-selling fashion doll. Since the comedienne is best known for her R-rated material and mining her physical imperfections for laughs, many people were surprised that Schumer would star in the PG-intended children’s film and bring the doll/character to life — which has been greatly criticized in the past few decades for building unrealistic expectations in young girls.

“Schumer will play a character who lives in Barbieland, among all of the various Barbie characters beloved by doll collectors (there are dolls covering over 180 careers),” according to Deadline. “In a fish-out-of-water story reminiscent of films like Splash and Big, Schumer’s Barbie gets kicked out, basically because she’s not perfect enough, is a bit eccentric and doesn’t quite fit the mold. She then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection.”

Sony’s live-action Barbie movie is set to hit theaters in the summer of 2018.
