While comic book movies dominated the conversation in 2016, they were not alone in all of the hype. Several iconic franchises continued their on screen sagas over the course of the year.

Not only did Star Wars see the next installment to its franchise in the form of brand new characters playing sequel to prequels, but dormant titles like Finding Nemo and Harry Potter saw new stories unveiled. In Ghostbusters case, the franchise was somewhat rebooted. The honor of being nominated for Best Franchise Movie in the 2016 ComicBook.com Movie Awards goes to the best films which qualify as sequels, prequels, or continuations of iconic major films, while not being based on content originally created in comic books.
