Just like we covered the biggest domestic box office smash hits of 2016, we fairly compiled a list of the years’ biggest box office bombs.
Videos by ComicBook.com
We really hoped that some of the films on this unfortunate list would have made it, especially Nine Lives.
It’s not every year that audiences get to see Kevin Spacey, an Oscar-winning actor, portray the cranky family feline under the spell of Chistopher Walken. However, not everyone thought the film was all the great.
Haters.
Again, we are looking at movies that were predicted to do well at the box office but didn’t or lost so much money that their release financially hurt the studio. Here’s looking at YOU Gods Of Egypt!
If said movie didn’t make any money when it was supposed to – it will definately be on this sad little list of films that just…couldn’t.
And what a harsh year it was was for movies!
Let’s get on with The 5 Biggest Domestic Box Office Bombs Of 2016…
Allegiant
The Divergent Series: Allegiantย did not live up to the success of its preceding films in the YA franchise.
This became clear when the previously planned sequel suddenly turned into a television series that we haven’t heard anything about in a few months.
We repeat – the sequel to Allegiant, starringย Shailene Woodley, was downgraded from a movie to a TV show.
The best part of this story is that no one took the time to tell Shailene Woodley about the propsed made for TV movie.
“I didn’t sign up to be in a television show,” she said. “Out of respect to the studio and everyone involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show.”
While the YA-adaptation had a strong beginning with the first film, Allegient didn’t come close to it’s 110 million dollar budget, only pulling in a little over 60 million total at the box office.
Plus, what on earth was with the overly orange CGI on the other side of the wall? It just didn’t feel right.

Gods Of Egypt
Gods of Egypt was so over-the-top that the most impressive box office numbers of all time would not have been able to trump the film’s outlandish budget.
However, if you watch Gods Of Egypt for what it really is, a ridiculous shiny spectacle, it is actually a fun flick.
Even if the the height of a god compared to a normal human made no sense at all and threw off the entire visual aspect of the movie…it was still entertaining.
When the movie released in February earned just $31.15 million in all of 2016 on its estimated $140 million budget.
Also, the director threw a public hissy fit while the rest of Hollywood was upset with whitewashed casting choices.
Except for Gerard Butler because…those abs.
But still, if you have the time, give it a shot. The scene with Zeus in the cosmos is a really pretty sight unless you’re Horus and don’t have eyes.

Zoolander 2
No number of celebrity cameos could have saved this movie and there were plenty smashed into this mess of a sequel.
When the first Zoolander released in the year 2001 it quickly became a quotable legend. The movie was so ridiculous that everyone loved it including the infamous hand model and black lung disease.
However, recreating that “legendary ridiclousness” did not work out so well for Zoolander 2.
Actually it’s better to just erase the sequel from your mind if you had to struggle through watching it, because we don’t want to taint the original.
Zoolander 2 is the epitome of a movie that tried way too hard to be…something.
The movie, which had an estimated budget of $50 million, made just $55.9 million worldwide.
Oops?

Nine Lives
How could a movie about cats be such a box office flop?
Nine Lives, a family friendly movie about Kevin Spacey turning into a an adorable cat named Mr. Fuzzypants so he would realize how much his family misses him, was surprisingly NOT a hit.
Christopher Walken couldn’t even save this one.
When this film was first advertised many people thought it was a joke. However, it wasn’t and no one went to the theater to see it when it was released in August 2016.
Meanwhile, audiences flocked to see thatย otherย pet movie The Secret Life of Pets like where was no tomorrow.
Nine Lives only madeย $19,700,032 total gross at the domestic box office, that’s LESS than Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip.
Still, it’s a cute movie especially for cat lovers.
At least read the synopsis below:
Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey) is a daredevil billionaire at the top of his game. His eponymous company FireBrand is nearing completion on its greatest achievement to date – the tallest skyscraper in the northern hemisphere. But Tom’s workaholic lifestyle has disconnected him from his family, particularly his beautiful wife Lara (Jennifer Garner) and his adoring daughter Rebecca (Malina Weissman). Rebecca’s 11th birthday is here, and she wants the gift she wants every year, a cat.
Tom hates cats, but he is without a gift and time is running out. His GPS directs him to a mystical pet store brimming with odd and exotic cats- where the store’s eccentric owner- Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken), presents him with a majestic tomcat, named Mr. Fuzzypants.
En route to present his daughter with her dream pet, a bizarre turn of events finds Tom trapped inside the body of Mr. Fuzzypants.
No? Fine!

Norm of the North
Surprise!ย
The biggest box office bomb of 2016 is none other than Norm Of The North, the odd animated film from Lionsgate.
We have no idea how a family friendly animated film could do so badly, but Norm Of The North takes the win…or loss.ย
However, Norm Of The North truly earned this spot because it was such a bad movie.
It has a current rating of 9% on Rotten Tomatoes with a critical consensus of, “Critics Consensus: A pioneering feat in the field of twerking polar bear animation but blearily retrograde in every other respect, Norm of the North should only be screened in case of parental emergency.”
Norm Of The North made a meagerย $17,062,499 at the box office since it’s release in January 2016.
No one wanted to see this polar bear twerk..no one.
