ABC News has announced plans to air a special edition of news program 20/20 shining the spotlight on the mother-daughter duo of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. Fisher passed away on Dec. 27th at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack while on a transcontinental flight a few days earlier. Reynolds died of a severe stroke the following day.
Debbie and Carrie: A Hollywood Love Story will air Friday night. That will be just two days after the studio quickly put together a 20/20 special on George Michael, the iconic pop singer who passed away on Christmas Day, and one week after airing a 20/20 special on the other newsworthy deaths of 2016.
Debbie and Carrie: A Hollywood Love Story will trace the lives and careers of both Fisher and Reynolds, and will explore their complex and sometimes contentious relationship, spotlighting the ups and downs of Reynolds storied career and what it was like for Fisher to be born into Hollywood.
Reynolds was a darling of Hollywood from a young age, with her most iconic role being in the musical Singin' in the Rain. Fisher followed in her mother's footsteps and starred as Princess Leia in Star Wars at the age of 19. The role proved to be one of the most iconic in science fiction cinema history, and she reprised the role in 2015 for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She played Leia again for Star Wars: Episode VIII, which wrapped filming earlier in 2016 and will open in theaters in 2017.
Anchored by Elizabeth Vargas, Debbie and Carrie: A Hollywood Love Story will also feature tributes to Reynolds and Fisher from their family and friends.
HBO has already announced plans for a documentary on Reynolds and Fisher, and that they will release the documentary two months early in light of their deaths.
Debbie and Carrie: A Hollywood Love Story airs Friday, Dec. 30 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT on ABC. The previously-scheduled episode of 20/20, Footprints in the Snow, will air at a later date.0comments
