Thanks to films like The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola became one of the most exciting directors of the '00s. The director has returned with her signature style and atmosphere with the seductive thriller The Beguiled, tapping Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, and Elle Fanning to star.
Based on the 1966 novel "A Painted Devil," the film tells the story of a Union soldier who becomes imprisoned in a Confederate girls' boarding house. The soldier uses his charm to seduce many of the women in the house, getting them to turn on one another, but he realizes he's getting more than he bargained for as the women also begin to turn on him.
Prior to The Beguiled, Coppola directed the Netflix special A Very Murray Christmas, and before that was 2013's The Bling Ring. In other words, it's been quite a few years since one of Coppola's projects has resonated well with audiences. However, from the look of things, teaming up with the right cast and telling an intimate story has piqued our interests.
The trailer is definitely worth a watch, as the ending hints at much more sinister motivations than the trailer would reveal at first glance.
The Beguiled hits select theaters June 23 and expands to more theaters on June 30.
