The way airlines treat passengers has majorly stepped into the spotlight lately with several instances being recorded and going viral. This most recent one revolves around a family and the way the flight attendants handle the situation is pretty surprising.

The Schear’s were trying to fly home to Southern California from Maui when Delta Airlines flight attendants told them they’d have to give up the seat they bought for their 2-year-old son.
Confused, the family tried to explain that they were told the FAA rules were that he had to fly in his own seat, to which the Delta employees advised them that the boy had to ride in a parent’s lap.
However, this information contradicts what Delta has listed on their own website, as it reads, “For kids under the age of two, we recommend you purchase a seat on the aircraft and use an approved child safety seat.”
The Schear’s even explained that on a previous Delta flight this was what they were required to do, but the flight attendant told them that was wrong.
It sounds suspiciously like Delta’s own employee’s don’t know their company policies, which is not comforting when they’re responsible for the safety of thousands of people a day.
At one point, a flight attendant even threatens them with being arrested.
Brian Schear, the father, recounted what they told him, quoting the employee he said, “You have to give up the seat or you’re going to jail, your wife is going to jail and they’ll take your kids from you.”
His wife Brittany went on to say, “As a mother, you have a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old โ it doesn’t matter whether that’s true or false. It put fear in me.”
Eventually, the family tried to settle but Delta employees kicked them off the flight with forced them to have to spend more money on a last minute hotel room, and new tickets home on a different airline, which just so happened to be United.
No word on if the family is going to pursue legal action, but with all the inconsistencies between what they were told, and what’s in writing, they might have grounds to mount a legal battle.
