Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones have reason to believe that there may be a release date in place for The Winds of Winter, the next installment of George R.R. Martin's fantasy series.
However, fans have been burned by supposed "leaks" just like this one in the past, so measure your excitement accordingly.
Amazon France has listed The Winds of Winter by George R.R. Martin with a release date of March 9, 2017. Martin's U.K. publisher, HarperCollins, responded to the listing by stating that "nothing has been finalized regarding the publication or the date."
This The Winds of Winter rumor should be taken with a grain of salt, or perhaps an entire salt shaker. Even disregarding HarperCollins' response, Amazon has a history of placing false listings with false release dates for Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels and Martin has been clear in the past that he still has a lot of work to do on The Winds of Winter.
This latest The Winds of Winter rumor plays into some wishful thinking by Game of Thrones fans who would like to get the sixth A Song of Ice and Fire book before Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres in 2017. A March release would fit comfortably into that window, with some extra reading time added in thanks to Game of Thrones Season 7's later than the usual premiere.
Game of Thrones fans can keep their fingers crossed for a March release, but we wouldn't recommend getting your hopes up until Martin himself, or his publisher, makes the news official. In the meantime, fans can look forward to A Game of Thrones: The Illustrated Edition.
Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres on HBO in 2017.
