In honor of actor Heath Ledger's 38th birthday today (at the time of writing this), we took a look back at the actor's impressive (though far too brief) career. But while fans all over the world have remember Ledger fondly from his film roles, who he was behind the camera remained a mystery after his death in the first month of 2008.
However, with the upcoming documentary I Am Heath Ledger will finally give fans a chance to look beyond the cameras and performances, and see the true face of the late actor – often as presented by his own recorded footage, as well as the testimony of family and friends.
Spike has released the first trailer for the documentary, which is slightly haunting in showing Ledger's fixation with the camera lens, constantly filming everything, long before the era of YouTube and Instagram fame, selfies, and "going live." If you ever wondered how Ledger was so good at those Joker confessional video segments in The Dark Knight, now you know where he got the practice.
I Am Heath Ledger will premiere on April 23rd at the Tribeca Film Festival, then in select theaters on May 3rd. It will then air on May 17th, on Spike.
