When the first cast photo from the set of the Jumanji reboot hit the internet, some fans expressed concern about Karen Gillan‘s outfit. Gillan was the only female cast member in the photo and she was wearing an outfit that some fans considered to be unnecessarily revealing in a gratuitous kind of way.

Gillan had a similar reaction when she debuted as Amy Pond on Doctor Who in 2010. Pond’s first episode, “The Eleventh Hour,” had her dressed in a skimpy police outfit while working for a kissogram service. But, like with her Doctor Who debut, Gillan insists that there’s more to the outfit than just an excuse to bear some skin.

“I’ve experienced something similar when I worked on Doctor Who and there was such an uproar about my costume when that was first revealed, so I thought it was happening all over again,” Gillan tells The Hollywood Reporter. “But I have to say, I’d never take on a role that was truly gratuitous for no reason. There’s a really valid reason why she’s wearing that. My character is really not happy about it!”

A rumor circulated that the Jumanji reboot plot involved children be aged into adulthood while adventuring in the board game’s fantasy world. Perhaps that offers an explanation of Gillan’s outfit, or perhaps not. Either way, the idea is still just a rumor.

Jumanji is the sequel to the beloved Robin Williams starring classic from 1995, and features the talents of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Dr. Smolder Bravestone), Kevin Hart (Moose Finbar), Karen Gillan (Ruby Roundhouse), Jack Black (Professor Shelly Oberon), Nick Jonas, Ser Darius Blain (Anthony “Fridge” Johnson), Madison Iseman, Rhys Darby, and Morgan Turner. The film is being directed by Jake Kasdan and is based on a script by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers.

Jumanji opens in theaters on July 28, 2017.

Jumanji won’t be Gillan’s only major movie appearance in 2017. Gillan is also set to return as Nebula, daughter of Thanos, in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, opening in theaters on May 17, 2017. She’ll also reprise the role of Nebula for Avengers: Infinity War in 2018.
