According to The Hollywood Reporter: The modern-day reboot — written and executive produced by Eric Garcia — is set in San Francisco and is described as a “soapy psychological thriller” that constantly blurs the lines between good and evil.

Here’s its synopsis: When erstwhile con-artist Hedra (played in the movie by Leigh) uses her professional connections to target Allie (portrayed by Fonda), a seemingly moneyed colleague in search of a roommate, Hedra slowly begins to realize that her mark may not be quite as innocuous as she first seems. Soon, viewers will come to understand that Hedra may have met her match in Allie, making viewers question who is really being “single white female’d.”

Single White Female (1992) – Hedy Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh) appears at the apartment of Allie Jones (Bridget Fonda) when Allie is at her neediest-she has thrown out her unfaithful boyfriend (Steven Weber) but she’s still on the verge of calling him back. The surviving half of a set of twins, Hedy perpetually seeks someone to complete her, and sees in the chic and articulate Allie everything she would like to be. So Hedy moves not only into the apartment, but into the most personal aspects of Allie’s life, including having her hair styled and colored to exactly match her roommate’s. But when Allie reconciles with her boyfriend, their unspoken bargain-intended to help both survive in the vast and often frightening canyons of New York City-goes terrifyingly awry, driving both women to their most primal extremes from which only one can emerge.

The film was written by Don Roos and directed by Barbet Schroeder. It grossed $48 million at the domestic box office and had a budget of $16 million. In 2005, a direct-to-video sequel, Single White Female 2: The Psycho, was released and starred Kristen Miller.
