New details have emerged about the beloved pitcher's tragic death.
CBS News reports Jose Fernandez was at American Social Bar and Kitchen before he left on his boat with two friends, Emilio Macias, 27, and Eddy Rivero, 25.
A photo was taken of the friends at the bar by a man around 2:20 am.
While investigators are still piecing together the 24-year-old's last hours, they believe the threesome left the bar soon after the photo was taken and hit the water. The boat then crashed into a jetty at full speed, causing it to flip up onto the rocks and kill all three men.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to have had a hand in the crash, toxicology tests have been done but have not been released yet.
Coast guard found the boat crumpled on the rocks around 3:30 Sunday morning. Miami-Dade police divers found two bodies under the boat and the third on the ocean floor by about 4:15 or 4:30, according to Fire Rescue Capt. Leonel Reyes.
None of the men were wearing lifejackets.
Friends and family flocked to Fernandez's mother's home to pay their respects and mourn together over the devastating loss. The ace pitcher's agent, Scott Boras, was in attendance bearing flowers and important documents for Fernandez's mother.
Through heavy tears, Boras said, "A great kid, gifted, his mother, his grandmother, nice young man."
Our thoughts and sympathies remain with the family through this tragedy.
