Illumination Entertainment is crafting another universe of adorable creatures after it’s immense success with Minions and The Secret Life of Pets, and the newest trailer gives us a closer look at its quirky cast of characters.

The tone of this trailer is much different than the previous trailers, as instead of playing up the comedy it focuses on how each of these talented singers made their way to the contest. The backing track of Eminem’s Sing for the Moment sets the mood accordingly, as each singer encounters a unique set of hurdles keeping them from their dream, from fear to betrayal to expectations.

“Dapper Koala Buster Moon presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. An eternal optimist, and a bit of a scoundrel, he loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Facing the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he takes one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition. Five contestants emerge: a mouse, a timid elephant, a pig, a gorilla and a punk-rock porcupine.”

Sing stars Matthew McConaughey (Buster Moon), Reese Witherspoon (Rosita), Seth MacFarlane (Mike), Scarlett Johansson (Ash), John C. Reilly (Eddie), Tori Kelly (Meena), Taron Egerton (Johnny), Nick Kroll (Gunter), Nick Offerman (Norman), Leslie Jones (Meena’s Mother), Peter Serafinowicz (Bid Daddy), Beck Bennett (Lance), Jay Pharoah (Meena’s Grandfather), Jennifer Saunders (Miss Nana Noodleman), and Rhea Perlman..

Produced by Illumination Entertainment, Sing is directed and written by Garth Jennings. Cristophe Lourdelet will co-direct. Given its musical roots, Sing will feature more than 85 classic songs from familiar artists and even boast a new track from Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande.

Sing is slated to hit theaters on December 21, 2016.
