Peter Jackson is responsible for bringing the “unfilmable story” to life on the big screen with his incredibly successful Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also managed to translate the Hobbit into a successful three-film franchise. With all that success to his name, you’d expect Jackson to have a pretty interesting home collection, and it turns out he certainly does.

Adam Savage (Mythbusters, Tested) recently took a field trip to Jackson’s movie collection abode, and it’s as impressive as you’d expect. One of Jackson’s newest purchases was one of the most impressionable items on his childhood, the faceplate for the Hal 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. He picked it up about 10 years ago, and it was actually Savage who helped him out with his new purchase.
“It came to us and this was separate (the faceplate and the Nikon lens). I have to tell the rest of the story because this was separate. It had been stored and came to us like this, something like that (shows example), and so this was supposed to be Hal, and I thought “Well how does that, it doesn’t, am I missing a glass thing or something, and I don’t even think I though to undo the lens cap. I just thought oh okay, well this doesn’t look like Hal to me but maybe I’m missing some bit, and then Adam comes along about ayear ago, comes along here and says “oh no no no no no” and he sort of pulls it apart and then sticks it back in gets it working for me, and it’s been a hit ever since. Anyone that comes here now I can just show it off and it’s a really good hit.”
Jackson’s collection goes much further than just 2001: A Space Odyssey. His collection includes other projects from his youth, like Masks and sculpts from The Planet of the Apes, models from the original Thunderbirds, and a dinosaur that can be seen in the background. Rows and rows of masks, costumes, weapons, and other assorted props adorn the wals and hallways, and it’s quite an impressive prop bunker he’s assembled.
