Buffy the Vampire Slayer will celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2017. For seven seasons the series, created by Joss Whedon, used the trials and tribulations of the Slayer as a vehicle to tell stories about growing up and adjusting to adulthood, then ended its run in 2003.

Sarah Michelle Gellar starred in the series as Buffy Summers, and she remembers those years fondly.

“The most formidable years of my life โ€” transition from teenager to adult โ€” were spent filming Buffy. I learned every day from the experience and from her,” Gellar tells The Hollywood Reporter. “She taught me it wasn’t about being perfect; it was about trying the hardest to be the best you can be. I also loved how hard Buffy worked, as she had no typical powers most superheroes have. She had to train and work hard at her craft. Buffy reminded us that being different was not only OK but really cool โ€” and at a time when most kids are trying to desperately fit in.”

With so many classic series from the 1990s being revived, could a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reunion be the in the card?

“I have always believed that what was so unique about the show was the use of horrors of those formative years,” says Gellar. “With high school and college as a backdrop, we were able to address racism, identity, bullying, guilt, death, first love and heartbreak using the demons as metaphors for the demons we all experience. I am not sure how that translates into adulthood, although I am sure it could. The burden of saving the world a lot always weighed heavily on her, so for her sake, I hope she is somewhere on a beautiful beach located far away from any Hellmouth.”

Comic book fans are likely aware that Buffy the Vampire Slayer has continued in comic book form. Dark Horse Comic has published Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10, plus two seasons of an Angel & Faith spinoff, since 2007. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 11 began publication in November and Angel Season 11 is set to debut later this month.

And, unfortunately, Buffy hasn’t been relaxing by a beach, though she did get away from the Hellmouth. So far the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics have seen Buffy leading a Slayer army based in Europe, the moving to San Francisco. She also helped eradicate, restore, and rewrite the rules of magic all in the meantime.

The first two issues of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 11 are on sale now, with the third issue set to go on sale on Jan. 25. Angel Season 11 #1 goes on sale on Jan 18.
