WATCH: Sherlock Season 4 Trailer
During a question and answer session following a screening of Sherlock Season 4’s premiere episode, “The Six Thatchers,” showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, along with stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Martin Freeman (Dr. John Watson), and Amanda Abbington (Mary Watson) suggested that Sherlock would be “slightly less of a dick” in Season 4.
Moffat even suggested that Season 4’s tagline could be “Dickless Holmes, More Of A Dick Watson,” to which Cumberbatch was quick to respond, “Not dick-less!”
Quips aside, the Sherlock team did stress a great deal of character development for Sherlock in Season 4, with Cumberbatch saying that Sherlock “is becoming, in a very clear way, responsible for his actions. But I think he understands that it’s a slow, slow process that began in the very first instance when he met John” and found the “needed missing part of the jigsaw that is him,” beginning a friendship that “has been a humanizing element all the way through.”
He “blindsided himself with his own humanity,” Cumberbatch concluded.
Sherlock has thus far been a self-described “high-functioning sociopath,” so it will be interesting to see how he transitions into a person who is a little more connected to those around him.

Sherlock Season 4 will consist of three episodes in total, just like the preceding three seasons. The premiere episode is titled “The Six Thatchers.” The second episode is titled “The Lying Detective.” The finale will be “The Final Problem.”
Sherlock has been on an extended hiatus, only returning for last year’s New Year’s special, titled “The Abominable Bride.” The episode turned the premise of Sherlock on its end by imagining the modernized characters as they may appear and act in the original Victorian setting of Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories.
Sherlock Season 4 premieres in the UK and in the US on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2017, with the episode titled “The Six Thatchers.”
