Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 (May 5th)
Marvel is going to make ALL the monies with its cosmic comedy sequel. As you can see, anticipation is at an all-time high, and first reviews from press are overwhelmingly positive.ย
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (May 12th)
Snatchย andย Sherlockย director Guy Ritchie has created a ball-to-the-wall crazy re-imagining of the King Arthur legend, but with each new trailer, the concept looks a little more exciting onscreen. The question is: has the marketing done enough to bring a sizableย audience to the theater?ย
Alien: Covenant (May 19th)
Alienย fans have been waiting for the franchise to get back on the right foot, andย Alien: Covenantย will supposedly be the answer to their prayers. The film bridgesย Prometheusย and the originalย Alienย with a gore-filled story about a crew of would-be colonizers, who land on the wrong planet. Xenomorphย mayhem ensues.ย
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (May 26th)
Theย Pirates of the Caribbeanย franchise has gone on for a long time, but truthfully,ย Dead Men Tell No Talesย looks more like everything we loved about the originalย Piratesย movie, and less of what we disliked about the sequels. With the original cast of Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlandoย Bloom and Kieraย Knightelyย all showing up, this will be a milestone sequel, indeed.ย
Baywatch (May 26th)
Comedic reboots of old TV shows can go either way. They can be great (21 Jump Street), or they can be not so great (Starsky and Hutch).ย With Dwayne Johnson and Zacย Effronย squaring off in the lead,ย Baywatchย seems like it will be some good fun.ย
Wonder Woman (June 2nd)
The DC Extended Universe has had a hard time of things, thanks to the divisiveness ofย Man of Steelย andย Batman v Superman, and the general disdain forย Suicide Squad.ย Wonder Womanย is supposed to be the turnaround point – the moment when the DCEUย stars on a more hopeful and heroic path. From what we’ve seen behind-the-scenes, it may just achieve that goal. ย
The Mummy (June 9th)
Universal Pictures will try to follow-up the runaway success ofย Fate of the Furiousย by trying to launch its shared universe of classic movie monsters. Tom Cruise and Russell Croweย are on hand to make it happen, with geek favorite Alex Kurtzmanย sitting in the director’s chair. If nothing else, this looks like some classic blockbuster movie goodness.ย
Cars 3 (June 16th)
Pixar has gone surprisingly dark with its third chapter of theย Carsย franchise, with this “Old vs. Young” story of Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) trying to outrace a new generation of fast cars. Carsย has never really been Pixar’sย best franchise, but this third chapter looks to have some unexpected depth.ย
Transformers: The Last Knight (June 23rd)
It’s another Michael Bayย Transformers movie. You know what they are, and what you’re going to get. Spend your money accordingly.ย
Despicable Me 3 (June 30th)
Theย Despicable Meย franchise has been one of the better new animated properties to come out in the last few years, and the minions show no sign of slowing their roll with this latest chapter.ย
Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7th)
Spider-Man: Homecomingย will bring Sony’s Spider-Man property into the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and so far, the footage from trailers has looked pretty good. Actor Tom Holland is a perfect fit in the role, and the Marvel influence is clearly working much better than what saw fromย Amazing Spider-Man 2ย at this point in its development. Our Spider Senses are tingling in the best way…
FullMetal Alchemist (July 12th)
This live-action adaptation of the popular anime will be hitting theaters overseas; but with a massive fanbaseย in West, we expectย FullMetalย Alchemistย will have some nice crossover appeal.ย
War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14th)
Thisย Apesย trilogy has been the dark horse that no one ever saw coming – and it looks likeย War for the Planet of the Apesย will ride that dark horse to an epic finale, with two machine guns blazing.ย
Dunkirk (July 21st)
Christopherย Nolan will leave superhero costumes and wild sci-fi concepts behind, for this story of doomed allied soldiers, surrounded on all sides by Axis forces. Having previewed the film ourselves, we can say: the tension levels inย Dunkirkย will be through the roof.ย
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (July 21st)
Lucย Bessonย hasn’t made a sci-fi movie this eye-popping and fantastical sinceย The Fifth Element –ย but that movie was so unique and fun that we have all the reason to be excited for Valerian, as well. ย
Atomic Blonde (July 28th)
Charlize Theronย is about to get herย John Wickย on in this action movie vehicle – with some assistance from John Wickย co-director, David Leitch. The stuntwork and set pieces look awesome, and Theronย is a total bombshell badassย in the role of Lorraine Broughton.ย ย
The Dark Tower (August 4th)
Stephen King’s epic literary saga has been trying to make it up onto the big screen for many, many, years – but now its finally happening, thanks to Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, and Girl With the Dragon Tattooย director Nikolajย Arcel. It’s hard to place expectations on this film, but we’re hoping the long wait will have been worth it.ย
Annabelle: Creation (Aug 11th)
Theย Annabelle: Creationย spinoffย franchise is getting another chapter – and thanks to the talent of director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out), it looks pretty damn scary.ย
