With over half a million views since the beginning of November, there’s a decent chance you’ve already heard of Hoshino, a new Star Wars fan film from writer/producer Eric Carrasco.

Carrasco, currently writing for Supergirl (and in fact the writer of Kevin Smith’s episode, currently in production), also worked on Smallville and Sleepy Hollow.

The film, which you can see below, tells the story of blind Jedi Master Ko Hoshino and her journey to becoming one with the Force.

The six-minute journey opens with the title character — played by Anna Akana — working to assemble her dismantled light saber, and then flashes back to her training, during which time she wasn’t blind, and was fixated on first getting her hands on said lightsaber.

The journey of how she got from that point to where she is at the beginning of the story is the principal focus of the film, accompanied by some moody horror elements and a great punch-out ending.

There’s a number of nods to familiar Star Wars tropes in the film, including a training remote not unlike Luke’s, and some of the beloved John Williams music from the official films.

You can learn more about the film and keep an ear to the ground for future projects by the team at Hoshino‘s Facebook page.

Hoshino is the latest Star Wars fan film — and there have been hundreds over the years, but with the resurgence in popularity as well as the “Star Wars Story” movies that are willing to explore the universe outside the confines of the Skywalker family, the good ones tend to feel a little more grounded in the galaxy far, far away at this point.

The next Star Wars film to hit theaters will be the first of those “Story” films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which hits US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it’s the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core “Skywalker Saga” of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels, led by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: “Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.”
