Star Wars: New Concept Art from Canceled Darth Maul Video Game

Despite killing Qui-Gon in Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), most fans were disappointed that the double-bladed lightsaber wielding Darth Maul (portrayed by Ray Park and voiced by Peter Serafinowicz) made such a quick exit from the Star Wars prequels — getting cut in half by a young Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, for the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Maul (voiced by Sam Witwer) was pieced back together, having his mind restored and receiving robotic legs. Maul and his brother became crime lords of The Outer Rim, and he eventually challenged his former master, Darth Sidious, for control of The Sith. And older version of Maul can be currently seen in Star Wars Rebels.

There was also a Darth Maul video game that was being developed by Red Fly Studios years ago, but LucasArts put it on ice as George Lucas was in the process of selling Star Wars to Disney. Since its cancellation, gameplay footage and concept art has surfaced online. And now, conceptual artist Thomas A. Szakolczay has updated his website with even more concept art from the defunct game. Although several pieces were previously shown in 2014, most of this collection has never-been-seen-before.

“Back in 2011, I was fortunate enough to work with Lucas Arts and Red Fly Studios to help develop the look direction for a new Star Wars IP that centered around Darth Maul,” Szakolczay wrote on his site. “It took place in a future time line sometime after Return of the Jedi and was meant to have a darker, grittier tone. Unfortunately the project was conceived around the same time as the Disney acquisition. It was cancelled after 1 year of development. Definitely dream of getting the opportunity to work on another Star Wars related project, so much fun!”
