Palpatine’s ‘The Last Jedi’ Appearance Possibly Debunked

Despite fans clamoring for new characters, stories and perspectives in upcoming Star Wars films, many are still eager to draw any connections they can to the original trilogy. One such connection fans drew was that Emperor Palpatine, who died in Return of the Jedi, would actually make an appearance in The Last Jedi, with theorists citing a specific LEGO set as proof. Thanks to a source close to the production, Slash Film has debunked the rumor that a Palpatine hologram will appear in the film.

The rumor gained notoriety when a listing for a LEGO set on WalMart’s website listed a Supreme Leader Snoke minifig that came with a small hologram as “Supreme Leader Snoke With Palpatine Hologram.”

While digging into the site’s specifics, WalMart revealed that they were not the ones responsible for entering details on the site, which means anyone could have included “Palpatine” into the description.

The image of Snoke with a small cloaked hologram figure does appear to be accurate, appearing in a LEGO set of a Star Destroyer. The official product description reads, “Open-out top panels reveal a detailed interior, including a working elevator to Snoke’s chamber with a mini hologram figure, bridge with seating for the crew, conference area and a passageway leading to the control room with instrument panel detailing.”

Merely referring to the figure as “mini hologram” without specifying the character does sound ambiguous, but the official Palpatine description is incorrect.

While not an official response, Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo weighed in on who he believes the hologram to be.

The site ultimately reveals, “A source close to the production confirmed to us that while there are holograms in The Last Jedi, there is not a scene where Snoke talks to a Palpatine hologram. Palpatine is not in the current cut of the film.”

We’ll get more information on this hologram when The Last Jedi will land in theaters on December 15.
