If you want to see Michael Fassbender, then you will want to head into theaters this weekend as Assassin’s Creed will be leaping into cinemas. The movie, which is based off a best-selling video game series, sees Fassbender acts as its lead. The release is one of the actor’s more recent theatrical appearances, but it looks like Fassbender could have been part of another major franchise. In a recent interview, the actor confirmed he was approached about joining the Star Wars universe.
Speaking with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, Fassbender was asked whether rumors about him passing on a role in the Star Wars universe was true. The actor was hesitant to share many details, but he did confirm he talked about a role with J.J. Abrams for Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.
“We talked about a role,” he confessed. “We had a conversation. I’m pretty sure I was busy doing something else in the summer he was kickstarting that.”
Of course, there’s no word on which role Fassbender may have been intended for. Fans have their own theories about the actor’s possible involvement; Many believe Fassbender may have be scouted for characters like General Hux or Kylo Ren, but those roles went to Domhall Gleeson and Adam Driver respectively.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set between the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and shortly before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In the film, resistance fighters embark on a daring mission to steal the Empire's plans for the Death Star.
