Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has a lot of distinctions that separate it from its counterparts in the Lucasfilm library. As the first Star Wars spinoff film, it is allowed to take risks as it diverts wildly from the path taken in the main Saga films.

One such risk was the film’s depressing-yet-hopeful ending as it dovetailed into the opening events of A New Hope, answering the question about why we’ve never seen these characters in main films before.

Put your SPOILER hats on everybody, because we’re diving right in.

Every member of the motley Rogue One crew met a grisly fate in the film, leaving no person spared in the ultimate sacrifice to help the Rebellion. And while certain drafts of the film saw Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor make it off of Scarif in tact, the other characters were always resigned to that fate.

But one such version saw a less climactic end to K-2SO, the fan-favorite turncoat droid played by Alan Tudyk.

Speaking at a press event for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s home release (via Cinema Blend), Tudyk recalled a scene that the production actually filmed but was sacrificed to give K-2SO a more heroic demise.

In this version of the scene, K-2SO died at the hands of Director Orson Krennic, the film’s primary antagonist. They decided that the death didn’t feel right and that K-2SO deserved better.

The theatrical cut depicts the droid getting into a shootout with Stormtroopers in a crowded corridor, providing protection for Andor and Erso as they secured the Death Star plans, before ultimately succumbing to a barrage of gunfire.

โ€จIt ultimately serves the narrative better as the droid is the first member of the crew to fall, foreshadowing the entire group’s inevitable end.

The scene is certainly heartbreaking, as they all are, but makes for a much better experience in the film.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now available on Digital HD. The film will be on DVD and Blu-ray April 4.

Han Solo Will Be “Completely Different” From Rogue One

Directed by Gareth Edwards, it’s the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core “Skywalker Saga” of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star.
