The new Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer dropped tonight and, in addition to giving fans the best look yet of the upcoming film, has left fans with a lot of questions. One of those questions? Who is Kylo Ren talking to when he talks about letting the past die?

While some may theorize that he's speaking to Luke in an attempt to convince him to go to the Dark Side it's equally as possible that Kylo Ren is attempting to manipulate Rey.

Yes, Kylo Ren has tried to get Rey to join him before. That scene near the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens with Kylo Ren trying to convince Rey to let him teach her how to harness the Force was an attempt that failed. However, if Ren is speaking to Rey in the trailer his approach has definitely changed and this time just might work. How? It all comes down to just what Ren is saying.

"Let the past die," Kylo Ren says. "Kill it, if you have to. That's the only way to become who you were meant to be."

In The Force Awakens Kylo Ren appealed to Rey needing a mentor, but an appeal to the past might actually be more effective. The past -- particularly the mysteries of her own -- are a significant point for Rey. Having lived her life alone scavenging on Jakku, Rey has almost idea of who she really is. All she knows is that she was left on Jakku as a child and while it's not something the film dwells too much on, not having a past or knowing what her history is is clearly painful for Rey and may be something she wishes she could move on from. Especially since for most of The Force Awakens Rey talks about needing to get back to Jakku where she has been waiting in vain.

By appealing to Rey's need to move on from the past by encouraging her to literally kill it, Kylo Ren may have a far more effective argument to get Rey to join him. The act of killing her past -- in whatever form that takes -- could theoretically be enough to shift her from the sight of the Light to the Dark Side.
