One thing the Star Wars universe has become known for is its expansive galaxy of planets. Each world featured within the universe has its own unique aesthetic, which often means that it took a series of concept art and design to get to that finished product.
A recently-released look at concept art for Star Wars: The Force Awakens reveals just that. Lucasfilm has unveiled a series of four concept art pieces, done by Industrial Light and Magic regular Erik Tiemens. According to a post on the official Star Wars Instagram page, the planet Jakku initially took on an entirely different design in its earliest renditions. You can click through the images below.
According to Lucasfilm, the planet was initially conceptualized as a "junk planet", and almost was set in a jungle climate instead of the desert seen within the film. In addition, the crashed Star Destroyer shown on the planet was initially supposed to be an Imperial space station.
While this doesn't indicate how many steps it took to get to the finished Jakku audiences saw in The Force Awakens, it does give a sneak peek into how creative decisions regarding the Star Wars universe are made. Even Rey (Daisy Ridley), the main character inhabiting the planet, was initially known as "Kira" in the film's earliest drafts.
