Having been announced at Star Wars Celebration 2016 in London, the Star Wars VR revealed little details since. It took Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference to unveil a detailed look at the upcoming experience, in an effort to showcase just how powerful the new iMacs will be.
It was John Knoll from Industrial Light & Magic who took the stage with a demo of the Star Wars VR experience which, based on the gifs below, will be an epic adventure.
The Star Wars VR experience is written by Batman Begins and Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer. It aims to take players on an interactive journey, telling a story about the most iconic villain of all time, Darth Vader. The stream offered a look at how players can begin their journey, giving them options to create a world around them through a menu tool which can drop new items and ships into the world, including Imperial Shuttles and TIE Fighters, but also allows players to shape the world around them.
While Nerdist‘s report notes that the presentation from Knoll was designed to highlight the new iMac’s abilities, it also gives Star Wars fans plenty of reason to get excited. In addition to creating worlds and placing ships, an option on the menu bar appears to allow users the option to create a “sequence,” meaning this Star Wars VR offers a movie-maker scenario.
“You are the visitor in this story that is happening in and around you, and to a certain extent you might even have some affect on [the narrative],” Goyer said in the original announcement. “You can pick up things, you can open things. You can push things, you can walk. You can touch characters.” This all means the demonstration at WWDC 2017 was only the beginning of what this Star Wars VR will have to offer.
There is still no word on when the Star Wars VR will come available.
